An Expo. with an Issue

First off when it comes to events I am generally quite positive with only a few negative comments here and there and yes this event did have some positives but as a whole it was not great and was actually quite a mess. The biggest issue at this event was that the venue size was too small for the amount of people, they had sold too many tickets and unfortunately a lot of people ended up stuck outside of the event because it was at maximum capacity and they couldn’t enter until people had left this meant that people who had brought VIP specialty tickets worth hundreds of dollars were stuck outside waiting to enter. The event also had two very big names as guests in Stan Lee and Patrick Stewart, the two were located in different areas of the venue and both of their queues were insane and basically blocked out complete aisles of the event as there was not really enough room for the large amount of queuing.

Before the event I had been contacted by Victoria, who I had met previously at the 2011 Melbourne Armageddon, she asked me if I could help out with something where she wanted me to get photos of the actors at the event giving the peace sign so that they could then be auctioned off to raise money for the charity Celebs4Kids. I contacted the organiser of Oz Comic Con and gave them all the relevent information regarding the request, but unfortunately it never went any further than that, which was such a shame as I did think it was a great idea and something fairly easy to do if he guests were okay with it. Since I wasn’t able to do that for Victoria I decided to have a little bit of fun and make the peace signs a theme for the weekend and went around taking photos of friends and called it Geeks for Peace instead, it gave me something to do throughtout the weekend and was a little bit of fun.

I spent the majority of the weekend hanging around either a mates stall and keeping her company chatting with Ryan Robbins and Karyn Baltzer because they are awesome and super friendly and the place was just way too busy to want to do anything else. Plus there was no way you’d chance leaving the venue for fear you would never get back in. At one stage there was a large group of us hanging around chatting and Ryan called us the Kult of Karyn, which we pointed out to him he had just named us KOK, we had a good laugh and then there were photos taken of us all bowing down to our leader, beacause it’s all part of the fun. At one stage Karyn was eating some hot chips and a mate gave her some Vegemite to try and Karyn decided to dip the chips into the Vegemite to eat which was definitely something different and perhaps the start of a new trend?!

Throughout the weekend I got a few photographs with guests, first one was a photo with Mitch Pileggi and me wearing my flightsuit because that’s generally what he wore in Stargate: Atlantis. I also got a photo with Karyn simply because she is amazing and I just had to, for this photo I was wearing my FBI vest for no particular reason at all, but Karyn did like my vest so much that she asked if she could wear it to get a photo with Mitch, so she did and it’s adorable. I also got a group photo with my fellow SG-7 costume group members, we got a photo with Mitch, Jason Momoa and Sharon Taylor, I didn’t have my full costume with me but at least had my Stargate BDU shirt.

A fun little memory I have from this weekend was on the Saturday night some friends and I were going to go out for dinner so I went to their hotel and was just hanging around in the lobby as I waited for them. I was being a bit of an idiot and randomly dancing around the place when I look behind me and see Patrick Stewart watching me through the window where he was at a dinner with his fans, I perhaps gave a smile and wave and sleeked off to the side… still an awesome memory if not a little embarassing.

On the Sunday night after the event was the Gifts for the Geek Aftermath Party and again it was an absolute blast, it’s just such a good time when after a crazy busy weekend everyone gets together to have a fun hang out session with some actors rocking up here and there to join the fun. This was another great evening, there was much laughter and good times and plenty of photos taken of everyone too a nice memento of the weekend and friends involved. These aftermaths have become my favourite thing at these events because its just such a good way to chill out after the weekend and spend time with amazing friends. I also got a photo taken with Sharon Taylor with my mate Maddie photobombing, I also got a photo with the Women Talk Sci-Fi ladies who I have classed as my Con Mum’s because we are a Con Family after all and they are amazing.
