First Red Dwarf Event
My first ever Red Dwarf event, how exciting! I was way too excited leading up to this event, Red Dwarf is my number one favourite show. It was the first real show I became a fan of and something I watched with my Dad. This event was also run by my favourite event organiser, Scotty of First Contact Conventions. It was a small event with only the three guests: Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn and Craig Charles.
Since this was my first ever Red Dwarf event, I had to get myself a VIP ticket. This included an invite to the cocktail party on the Friday night. Another great cocktail party, hung out with some great friends, met a lot of new people. Craig Charles had his son Jack come with him to the event, he looks so much like his father at that age. It was like seeing Lister from the early years of Red Dwarf.
I had a good chance to chat with all of the guests, probably made them feel old. I mentioned I had been watching Red Dwarf since I was eight years old. Although there were people younger than me there. I love that this show is loved by so many for so long. I spent quite a bit of time chatting with Jack, he was very easy to talk to and a lovely guy.
As this was the first Red Dwarf event it was nice to see a lot of new faces, some first convention goers. It’s always nice to meet new people and make new friends who are fellow fans of something you love. This event was absolutely amazing and so very entertaining, these guys are hilarious. They had everyone in stitches during their panels.
I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I don’t often sit through panels. However, these guys were brilliant and hilarious. There was so much laughter and mucking around I don’t even remember any specific moments of the panels. I just know that is was an amazing time and I couldn’t stop laughing. Jack did get up on stage and did a little keyboard performance for us which was fantastic.
I had to get photos with all three of the guests at this event, how could I not. I was also wearing my Smeg Head T-shirt, which I’d brought in the UK the previous year. Perfect for a Red Dwarf event. You can pretty much tell by the photos, just how excited I was meeting the guys. It’s too bad that Chris was missing, otherwise it would have been the full crew. I love my photos and am so thankful to have had the chance to meet these guys.
This was another amazing First Contact Conventions event, Scotty and his crew always do an amazing job. And it’s always brilliant seeing an event bringing so many new people into the scene. Other than the photos and autos I also brought one of Craig’s CD’s ‘The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club’. This also came with an autograph and a T-shirt as well. I also brought Robert’s Book ‘The Man in the Rubber Mask’, which he signed for me.
First DVD Credit
There was a point during the panels when the person filming the event asked for some help. This meant that on the DVD of the event I was credited as a Camera Operator. There is also a small image of my photo with Danny on the back cover of the DVD. Not the first time that has happened but it’s the first time I made the credits.
For First Contact Conventions this was a two-convention weekend. The SmegCon event was held on the Saturday and then there was a Star Trek event held on the Sunday. The event was called OzTrek 9. The guests in attendance were Nicole DeBoer and Terry Farrell, both from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Because I had purchased a VIP ticket to SmegCon I also got a general admin ticker to OzTrek 9. The event was held in the same location so I ended up staying with a friend in the hotel.
There was an absolutely hilarious moment that had be in hysterics during this event. When I was hanging with some friends around the photo booth. One of the guys working the event realised who Terry Farrell was and yells out “Oh my god, it’s the chick from Becker!”. Probably not funny to anyone else, other than us there, but it was hilarious. Everyone was in hysterics and it was brilliant.
