This event is an incredibly special moment in my life that I will never forget, it was an absolute pleasure to meet Don S. Davis, Carmen Argenziano and he’s partner Eileen Grubba. Again my friends and I went as VIP were we had dinner with the guests the night before the convention, started the night off sitting next to Don who was a sweetheart he spoke so lovingly about other cast members and especially of his wife Ruby. At one point I was persuaded to recite my all time favourite Stargate blooper, that being the MacGyver one during the episode Solitudes “I’m stuck on a Glacier with MacGyver” classic. One of my favourite movies when I was younger was Look Who’s Talking and so it was nice to have a chat with Don about the movie. At one point I was going through tones on my phone because my ringtone at the time was the Stargate theme song with lyrics, and my message tone was “Most people I know, think that I’m crazy” Don got a good laugh out of that.

After a time Don and Carmen swapped table and he and Eileen joined us, we shook hands and introduced ourselves I said “I’m Janelle, but you can call me Smiley” He liked that and thought it fitting. Carmen spoke very lovingly of Amanda Tapping and how great she is and how she helped in so much on the show. We spoke more about Stargate and Amanda we talked about careers and family, he told me about his daughter who was the same age as I was. After dinner was over and Don had retired to bed Carmen stayed and chatted with us and it was such a comfortable and relaxing conversation. When it was time for Carmen and Eileen to go I told them that I would be wearing a costume the following day and Carmen said “Well if I don’t recognise you, just smile”.

The next day at the convention I was dressed in a Australian Air Force Blues outfit, since both Don and Carmen played Air Force Generals I thought it was fitting. When Carmen walked in and saw me he looked really impressed and commented on how it looked great, he then followed it up by giving me a big hug and I’m pretty sure there was stupid fangirl grin on my face. I got to watch on as Don and Carmen did a little photo-shoot together, there was some puckering for kisses and all, it was entertaining to watch and they just look like two mischievous kids in photos together. I got my photos with them both along with big hugs and Don also commented on my costume.

Carmen was up for his panel first whilst Don went off to explore the city, Carmen was hilarious and it was a great panel. He spoke about working with Amanda and the rest of the Stargate cast he spoke very highly of them all and how he loved working with them, he also mentioned how he would have loved to explore the character of Selmak more. I’ll always remember his answer to a question regarding the ‘relationship’ between Sam and Jack in Stargate, he answered by saying that from a father’s perspective he doesn’t think Jack would be the right man he’d want for his daughter but that if it meant she was happy it wouldn’t matter. I thought this answer was great, I’m not a shipper in fact I prefer the subtle hints but I thought it was amazing how he answered this question it’s obviously something he had really thought about, and he’s daughter is lucky to have such a loving and caring father.

Before the end of Carmen’s panel it was time for the Evil Vegemite Girls to strike again, so I threw Carmen a tube of it and after opening it up he then lifted it over his head and squeezed it into his mouth, at first just a little bit but he followed it up with more and his reaction was priceless. When the taste hit him he picked up a bottle of water and skulled most of it before tipping the remainder over his head and then going for some mentos. At one stage when talking about Eileen and how she was an actress and singer he then got down on one knee and begged her to come up on stage with him, it took some persuading but eventually she came up and joined him. It then finished with them both getting some special Aussie presents (Cricket shirt and hat).

Next there was an auction and I managed to score one of the photos of Don and Carmen, autographs included. After the auction was a screening of the last episode of Stargate SG-1 ‘Unending’ before Don’s panel… I had my own special moment with Don and it’s something I’ll always remember, whilst everyone was sitting watching the episode I was standing at the back of the room when Don came in, he walked over to me, draped his arm over my shoulders and we chatted, I have to admit that I don’t remember exactly what was said I was just enjoying the moment, I do however remember at some point Don gave me a hug and kissed me on the head he was such a loving person it was such an honour to have been able to meet him.

Don’s panel was great he again spoke so lovingly of his wife Ruby and their animals, he told interesting stories of when they got together and how Teryl Rothery had a bit to do with that, he spoke about their wedding and a big sign Amanda had on her house congratulating them, he spoke lovingly about Amanda and Teryl and when asked what his favourite animal was answered Human – Female. He spoke briefly of his time in the military, he talked about his art work and drawings and informed us of an upcoming exhibition. He spoke about working on Stargate and working with the crew, he said that coming to work on the show was a pleasure.

When it came time for the Vegemite Don decided not to have any on stage, saying he had tried it before and wasn’t going to do it again. As a present Don was given an Australian Army Slouch Hat from Locky, who’s in the Army and who spent ANZAC morning with Don and the event organiser Scotty at a dawn service a few days before the event. Don was honoured and wore the hat with pride.

Getting autographs was another fun venture, queuing up and making new friends and having a laugh. I remember for some reason when it came to getting my autograph from Don I was singing the ‘Old Man Emu’ song, guess I was just showing my Aussiness! This is definitely an event I will never forget and am so pleased I was able to enjoy these moments as I did. Not just meeting such amazing men and actors but also the many friends that were gained throughout the day. Including Eileen who I happily chatted to throughout the day, such a lovely person.I’m extremely honoured that I was given this amazing opportunity to meet Don, and I will always remember the moments I had at this event. We were very lucky to have had him visit and to have the chance to meet such a loving person. He is missed…
